My grandfather has had a 1972 280SEL 4.5 in his garage since 1984 and has finally decided he wants to sell it. He has all the parts for it and it is intact but stripped and prepped for paint.

He doesn't use the Internet and asked me to research the best route to selling it. Can anyone point me to a website to list it for sale? We're in southern NH and the car will need to be towed so I'm thinking a local site is best.

Also, any idea what this car is realistically worth? We are more interested in unloading it quickly rather than getting the most $ for it. I know it's tough to gauge with such little info (and no pictures) but I'm told it is in very good shape and would be perfect for restoration.

This site would be a good bet, as would Craigslist. Top dollar would never happen. Sitting since 1984 means every rubber bit is shot - so don't even TRY to start the engine. The rubber D-Jet line will burst and you'll wind up with a fire. It would be a fun project, as long as it hasn't rusted due to sitting without paint for so long.

I believe I said that we weren't really interested in "top dollar," just want to get rid of it. That being said, ballpark price? $500? $2000? I don't know where to start on this.

$2000 for a car in bits would probably be an unrealistic asking price - but it really would depend on the amount of work the condition the additional spares(?) and how good you can get it to look in the photographs!

Well it is really a very desirable car. I would love to have it, but I am probably as old as your Grandpa. Are you not interested in it at all? Since it is down that far, sounds like all the dirty work is done. But it is hard to haul them around, harder when they are down to bits. I did a job like that 20 years ago for a dentist friend of mine. I went from Indy to north central Iowa to retrieve a 54 Cadillac Convertible from a con artist who had been bleeding money from a whole bunch of suckers, saying he would restore their cars. All he did was tear them down, let them sit, ask for money, let them sit, sell some parts, ask for more money deal. Well anyway, it is a difficult deal to sell. It is even more difficult to make the buyer believe all the parts are there. I could conceive that someone who is in the area might be inclined to go $2000.00 for the car as you have described it. If the surface is pitted and covered with rust, much, much less. I would advertise it at $2000.00 or best offer. You don't have to take what they think is their best offer.

Thanks for your response. The car has zero rust as it's never seen the elements. I've listed it on local CL as well as other MB forums with simply "best offer" listed as price and hopefully someone comes along and wants to haul it around. As you said, the toughest part will be getting it out of the garage. All the parts are there, hopefully we find someone with a trailer that can come take it.

Well you say there is no rust but say it is stripped of all paint. It would have to be stored in a dehumidified and temp controlled building. Just in a building, ( a garage) with normal temperature change it will have thick rust. And you say you have not seen the car. You better go look.

The garage is full insulated and temperature controlled, I read your post word for word to the owner and said that isn't the case because the temperature changes are never too dramatic.

For anyone that might be interested, we sold the car today for $500. The buyer was a really nice guy from upstate NH who planned to restore it and drive it. Happy to see it gone to a good home, and my grandfather made room in his garage for his '82 380SL.

I'm sure I'll be back in a few years when that car hasn't been touched and it's time to move it out too.
