She's been driving so well that I decided to open her up after triple checking fluid level prior to make sure it hadn't dropped at all since the original fill. And of course warming her up plenty....Looks good to me

No doubt, the 92 500sl I just got has a rebuilt tranny in it. And after only 4k miles, the governor already failed.
Waiting to hear back from the PO and see if they'll cover the repair.
All I have is 1st and reverse now.

I think I give up now.

Sunvalley Transmissions I have "heard" are the best MB rebuilders around. They want $1500 exchanged for a rebuilt 722.358. Sound a reasonable deal?

It's funny you mentioned Sunvalley Transmissions...
I just spoke with the PO of my car and he said that's where he got the tranny rebuilt at. After around 4k miles the gov' has already failed.

It's been under two years since it was installed by a local shop that gets their trannies from them, so it should be covered under warranty.
Hopefully...

722.3 SECONDARY OIL PUMP / SHEARED GOV GEAT

Hello all, just figured I would share something to save someone a big headache. I just fixed a 722.3 transmission on a 1991 350 SDL w126 that would not shift out of 2nd gear, car only has 80k miles on it. I don't know where it came from but a small piece of plastic got sucked up into the secondary oil pump and jammed it causing the end of the pump shaft to shear off leaving all kinds of damage and metal pieces, it also sheared the hardened pin off inside the governor. Dealer wanted over $400 for the oil pump and almost $300 for the governor.

The fix was to eliminate the secondary oil pump by buying the block off plate, gasket and screws from the 1992 S350 Diesel W140 body from the dealer (PARTS TOTAL WAS $36). Then I brought the Governor to my friends machine shop and we drilled through the collar of the gear and a tiny bit into the shaft, tapped and installed set screws with locktite and peened the heads.

Transmission shifts like new again...

Update: It took some emails and phone calls but had gotten the tranny warrantied. All I had to do was the R&R myself. Found out whomever installed it originally had dropped a portion of the filmed seal from the tranny fluid container into the tranny and it eventually caused the governor to explode.
Thank you Marc @ Sun Valley Mercedes Transmissions for the quick no cost replacement YOU ROCK !

Pulled old to get the new. Took only ten days turn around with shipping (from N. NV to S. CA).

Jacked up in the garage ready for new tranny
rope was used to tie the exhaust ( onto the work bench) out of the way
even with taller 6 ton jack stand I had to remove the tranny from the jack to clear engine and slide it out on a blanket
no worries the tranny is about 120 lbs and I'm used to lifting weights at the gym

Good to go, ready for another 100k miles (on H&R sport springs and 18s, handles like a go-cart in corners)
though I ended up selling to a local and bought a 97 BMW 328i convertible the same color
endless process with me, buy/trade, upgrade/fix, repeat... now trying to trade my BMW for a Boxster
