Deep, yes. I picked up an impact one. Worked fine. I feel you pain. Just lost the transmission on my old '88 Supra. Too expensive to have fixed and too much of a job for me to attempt. Have to say goodbye to the old girl.

I have the repair manual in pdf format its 7000 kb big i tried uploading it didn't work, here is a page of it.
|
Thanks. I have that manual already.
How deep does it need to be? I have a 30mm standard depth 1/2in drive (pn 45926)...Think it'll work? Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more |

You have to clear about 2 inches of the shaft. The one I used was about 3 inches deep. Cost about $6 at Carquest.
|
Thanks, I'll have to check my local carquest. I found one kinda close to me. Sears does not sell any 30mm deep local.
Some good news though! Got a used 107k mile 722.320 (87 300E) tranny for $170....The car took a big hit on oil pan and engine seized. Fluid smelt good and looks fine. Gear also looks good. Plan is to get this little hiccup wrapped up in the next few weeks before xmas :) |
Never have I seen such a beautiful gear :) Thankfully the spare tranny I have looks great!

I also purchased a 3/4 drive 1+1/4inch deep(er) socket, but that one is too thick  Going to have to hunt around to find what I need... But in the mean time got the governor out of the spare tranny. It looks just as good as mine does, so I am just going to throw it right in. I see no reason to remove that gear. Worst case I pull it out again, no biggy. |
Got the 30mm socket today, worked perfect.
The rear output cover is almost off, but it doesn't seem to want to come out all the way. I have the flange removed, and according to the manual that should be it, but it feels very tight still. Am I missing anything, or is it just going to need a little more brutal love? I just want to ensure I don't ruin something in case I need it although all I am aiming to get out is the main output gear/shaft. |
A little sick today, but had a quick attempt again...popped off without much trouble this time.
Alrighty! Got the final gear I need. Looks brand new. Wednesday I have all day to put everything back in the wagon and get her wrapped up! Very excited! :D http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear1.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear2.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear3.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear4.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear5.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear6.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear7.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear8.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear9.jpg |

Wowzers....How the heck do you get that snap ring that holds the bearing in place on the output cover? Its so strong that it snapped the tips of my snap ring plier off!! I went through 2 sets already!
 I am just practicing on the spare tranny before I pull mine off tomorrow. Is it really necessary to replace it or as long as its not grinding it'll be ok? I'll replace the rear output seal of course though. |
Thanks for the pictures. I never could figure out how that spout went back in. Now I see the notch it hooks up to. I'm going to have to go back in and fix that some day before I lose the speedo.
|
Alrighty...wagon cover off and went to town on it this AM.
Metal shavings on rear cover, but it seems contained. I found nothing in the pan, and only a little in the output housing. Either A) Filters doing its job B) The lack of distance after it blew saved me. Regardless, I think I dodged a bullet. I am going on the safe side and dumping all fluid (I ran magnet through drained fluid and it came out clean) and going to put some Valvoline Maxlife in for 500mi, drain it again then put my Redline back in. http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear10.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear11.jpg Got the snap ring off....This was a real ***** I'm telling you... http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear12.jpg New bearing: http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear13.jpg New Seal: http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear14.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear15.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear16.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear17.jpg Chewed up gear: http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear18.jpg I noticed something though....Why would my oil pipe be recessed as compared to the spare tranny I photoed earlier? The big orange box unit on the rear. Note how mine is not actually "in" it. |
Looks like I made a whoopsie...
CAR SHIFTS!! WOO! But -- Parking pall won't engage, and there is a low level clicking noise. What could I have missed??? :( |
Before you put the rear cover back on did you check if the pawl was working properly against its spring?
You've posted several pictures. The actuating assembly was in this position http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...sion/rear9.jpg But then it looked like this http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear15.jpg http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/p...ion/rear16.jpg Perhaps something is jammed? A low level clicking noise could be made by the pawl grinding itself against the teeth... not something you want. |
Well it was engaged otherwise I couldn't have tightened the the main 30mm output shaft nut.
I have monday set aside to pull the cover off again. I hope this is the last time. Good news though -- no leaks of any kind anymore! Sat for a week now and not a single drip. |
