W123 Coupe Door Checks

Both are toast on my 300CD. One of the ball ends is missing and the spring is jacked on both sides.

As some of you know, the coupe door checks are NLA from on-line sources and dealers. I have removed the check assemblies and have rigged a Jeep-Like restraining strap for safety but here is my question.

Has anyone had success modifying a sedan door check to fit the coupe? I suspect that the door opening arc will be limited but I can live with that if it is the only limitation. Are the mounting holes in the right place to install a sedan strap? I know the sedan assemblies are inexpensive but I don't want to take the door panels off again if it is a lost cause.

I thought they were the same as sedan checks. Have you checked EPC?

I bought one from Fastlane last year for my coupe. Are they NLA since then?

Door Check

Yak my man;
You forced me to think.
EPC p/n for coupe door check is 123 720 03 16.
EPC p/n for sedan front door check is 123 720 05 16
but
EPC p/n for sedan rear door is 123 720 03 16 SAME AS COUPE

Thank You

I was looking at my driver's side (right hand side) one yesterday as it doesn't hold the door. Glad to see a replacement might be available.

Anyone have any tricks for getting the pin that holds the strap to the A pillar out? Mine's in there pretty tight and it's tricky to get a punch straight on (and I don't want to gouge the paint).

for Mr. Tibbs

Yes, they are difficult to remove. I gave them a shot of PB Blaster then pulled the clip with pliers. A flat blade screwdriver placed carefully under the head of the pin and tapped upward carefully got them moving until the pin could be grasped by pliers and worked out.

IRT part availability; I found the rear door check also very hard to find. No surprise since it is the same part number. I did find Meyle aftermarket items on mercedes source dot com and ordered two.

Note: name of source modified to allow identification.

Thanks. I might try using the screwdriver on the head of the pin. The circlip came off fine and the pin etc looks fine (just a little dirty). Would be good to get the check strap working, but then I do have bigger issues that I should probably do first (like the dodgy auto gearbox).
