What is the best route to upgrade to HID?

Hello Folks,
I have a '92 600SEL and a '92 300SD and as I get older I get more and more disappointed with performance of the stock headlights.

Thus I would love to upgrade to HID.

So my question is, am I better off with upgrading to an OEM headlights such as those on the late nineties W140 models, and if so how much of a modification is involved?

Or would an aftermarket setup do an equally good job while saving a lot of money!?
I am mostly worried about possible unsatisfactory performance and the lack of projectors and light scatter in the Pre HID OEM headlights.

Finally, does anyone have pictures of the OEM HID headlights, especially ones showing if there is a projector inside the housing and what it looks like? One without the without the front glass cover would be best!

I was also told that a middle ground solution would be to replace the current headlights with a post '95 set which would produce a better light output but some work is needed to adapt the newer set to the old car.

Would any of you shed some light on what needs to be done to accomplish this task?

Thank you all.

I purchased mine on ebay. Complete HID headlight assembly with glass lenses. HID both high and low beam. They were plug and play. Quite easy to install, work great, and look good(like Euro stock) good price. I see them for your car too.

IMHO the only route to go is for the factory HIDs. You will get a proper beam pattern and won't blind everyone else on the road.

I just checked but there was none.

I emailed the seller asking, though.

Thanks.

I would never put those on my car. They are cheepie Depo fixtures with a "drop in" hid conversion. I guarantee the OEM hids will have better performance... that's why they cost more.

You are correct, but where are the OEM HIDs!?
I have had no success finding a pair.

I can understand why they are scarce, they were an option on three model years only.

i purchased HID (EBAY KIT) fir my W124 which also has the dual filament and although is looks good on low beam and a really bright light they blind people and the high beams suck. they put the low beam HID and the low beam Halogen and since the HID bulb is large and long there is no room for the High so it is offset therefore no beam pattern.
