Dropping a steering column on a 123

I need to replace the entire steering lock assembly on my 82 240D. Yes, the key still turns but the electrical switch portion is shot and the mechanical part of the lock requires allot of fiddling with the steering wheel so that the key will turn. SO, I was advised to remove the steering column to make this job easier. I tend to agree with that logic. The space is tight within the cluster area and standing on your head down by the brake pedal isn't that great either.
Looking at the FSM, disconnecting the steering shaft is easy, but how is the steering column held in place ?

Remove the gauge cluster. You will find 2 13mm bolts holding the column to the dash. There's a lot more involved to get where you are going. Suggest you search- this has been done many times. More info on Diesel section that here most likely.

Here's a picture of where it should go when the dash is out

You've got the FSM right - so you don't need a link to the PDF at startek?

Oh and there's this one too

It is hard to see the mounting points amongst the wires in the picture though...

Having done both, I'm not sure pulling the column is easier than just pulling the ignition. But I also had a PO who put loctite on the steering wheel bolt so that made the job a lot harder.

Detaching the seat and moving it rearwards may be a third option to gain more room under the dash if you opt to not drop the column.

If you do drop the steering column, pay careful attention to the flex tube to not bend it and make sure you properly scribe the location of the steering wheel. I'd read up on all the related areas in the FSM.
