Mobil 1 0w-40 5 liter jug

I just saw a 5 liter jug of Mobil 1 0w-40 at Advance Auto Parts. $37, rather than $9 per quart. I had never seen it in that packaging before.

Are you sure it was MB Spec 229.5 ? Other Mobil 1 0W-40 oils do come packaged that way.

Steve M 02-10-2012 01:11 PM

I didn't know there were multiple M1 0w-40's out there, so I guess my answer to your question is no. The package looked like a large version of the quarts I buy that are MB 229.3, 229.5.

I didn't buy it, since I keep 10 quarts on hand and replenish them after each oil change. I do that because the stores around here often have too few of the 0w-40's to do an oil change, so I have to plan ahead. Which reminds me, the local Wal Mart started selling them again. They had them on a shelf which was deep enough to hold only 6 quarts, which doesn't help us MB owners. But now they rearranged things and they often have more available (I can park my car in one spot and walk to the Wal Mart and Pep Boys - between the two of them I can sometimes get 8-10 quarts.)

Next time I'm at Advance I will check its label for the MB 229.5 designation.

at least here in Tenn they are in 5 quart jugs, which I hate. There to heavy,a gallon was bad enough.I still buy gallon jugs of rotella at Wal Mart.

If you don't mind the hassle, sign up at Mobil 1 site for rebates on oil prurchases. You submit receipts for oil purchases (multiples of 6 qts) and you get $5 credits for a wide variety of merchant coupons.

I had e-mailed them a while ago and they said they didn't make it in that size. Maybe they reconsidered.

I meant five quarts

I saw an Autozone ad for 5 quart jug or 5 single quarts.. I went to the store and they only had one quart left. Had to run to another store and get my 7, full price for all. Oh well, it'll last a good while.

O'Reilly's occasionally has a sale at about $6/qt. so I try to stock up for two or three changes. If they run out you can get a 'rain check' to buy it at that price when it's back in stock.

Pep Boys usually has a spring special which includes 5 qts plus a Fram filter for about $30. You can discard the filter and still save a little money.

When there's a sale on 5 quarts, I try to buy 10 and I either tell the clerk to get filters for his own car, or I grab a couple for the Toyota or GMC (I have 6 extra filters for those cars laying around).

The last price I paid for quarts at Wal Mart was around $6.50, I think. I don't understand why the price of synthetic oil is skyrocketing faster than real oil at the auto parts chains.

O'Reillys has Mobil 1 right now for $5.50, but only a few more days or so. The 0W40 tends to go quick for some reason.

Kmart had M1 15W50 for $4.34 and Castrol Synthetic 5W50 for $3.99. I cleaned out the store, not that they had much left.

FYI,

NAPA Auto Parts specializes in European motor oils. They carry a German oil called
LIQUI MOLY at 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30, 5w-40, and 15w-50.

I bought a Napa branded oil made by Vavoline in 15w-50 for $3.42 a quart. It's very hard to find these weights in Walmart or Autozone.

Yesterday at WalMart I saw Mobil 1 in 5 quart jugs for $26.85 and there was plenty of it. If I remember correctly, there was 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40.

I would love to buy it in 5 quart jugs. Only one to open and pour. 9 (to get 8.5) is a lot more waste and takes longer.

I buy mine sometimes at the $6/qt sales but it sells at WalMart at a standard price of $6.52/qt for 0w-40 and at the local Farm Supply for close to that.

I buy my diesel M1 in the 5qt jugs for my burb. It works out easier and it easier to set on a shelf.
