Block heater for 420sel

Anyone know of a good aftermarket block heater for a 420sel? The dealer wants $70 for one and I think that is way too much. I have seen some on ebay for around $45 (advertised for diesels but is the basically universal for mercedes) but can't tell what brand they are - picture's too small and my eyes aren't what they used to be! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

block heater?

I didn't realize you would need a block heater for a gasoline engine. I thought that they were only needed for the diesel's.

Sure! Why should diesel owners be the only ones to enjoy a warm car from start up? Gassers don't need them but when the temp. is minus 8 it sure is nice to hop in the car and start it with instant heat! It also saves some wear and tear on the engine.

Block heater

I put in a block heater onto my 1989 420 SEL last year. I remember that it was made in Winnipeg Manitoba, but the brand name escapes me. When installing it, be sure to have some of that high temperature high pressure petroleum product safe pipe thread leak stopper. I bought mine at home depot. The teflon tape did not work for me, after 2 tries.

I use mine when the temp goes below -10c, only for 2 hours prior to starting. It certainly helps to warm the block, especially the coolant and oil.

Anyone know where the block heater is on a 1988 420 sel? Swapped in a newer motor and the block heater cord needs to be plugged in to the block and I can't find the block heater itself on this block. I hope it is'nt behind the starter.

never mind, this was an old thread.... 2004

I found it on the old motor. The new motor does not have a block heater. Just a large freeze plug looking thing. Would that plug looking thing be threaded into the block?? how does it come out?? The middle looks like a male square headed thing.

Wish I'd have checked that before putting it into the car in hindsight. Assumed because the car is in Canada it already had a block heater...whoops.
It is not located behind the starter but I think the exh. manifold would need to come off and I am not going through that again. It is on the front passenger side of the block.

I wonder how big of a socket one would need to get that old block heater out of the old engine...looks big. 46mm or standard equivilent.....?

I guess I'll be cutting up another lower rad hose for a block heater.
