One thing after another... 92' 190E

Hello, my name is Amanda.
I have a 1992 190E 2.3L W201 M102.
Recently it has been running with a high idle at roughly 2000rms, instead of the normal 700ish.

To combat this problem my bf and I have been shifting into neutral at red lights and revving the engine to lower the rms to a normal range (works 85% of the time).
Does anyone know what might be causing this? My bf tried tapping the micro-switch, and another part that little bristles brush over to see where the throttle is (something like that), but nothing has worked.

Anyways if that wasn't bad enough, my bf got frustrated with my baby, and while in neutral, revved the engine well into the redlining area. Later that day, we noticed the back light was very dim and one of the seat heater lights began flickering. Once home, the car was shut off, and when we restarted it the dash lights didn't come one at all. Now there seems to be a charging issue and the car is only running on the battery, however; we don't believe it has to do with the alternator. For the past 2 days we have been charging it over night with a trickle charger.
Any ideas of that's going on now?
We are planning on doing a diesel swap (see other post - Gas to Diesel Swap) in the next coming weeks so we don't want to put a lot of money into the engine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
-Amanda

Check all the fuses ....roll them in the holders in case they are not making good contact.

Check the OVP relay, IIRC it's next to the battery in front of the windshield....has a RED 10amp fuse on top of it.

Check for loose or displaced vac' hoses...especially under the intake manifold.

Others will chime in soon too with more tips.

There are two return springs on the accelerator mechanism if one or both of them are missing these are usually the symptoms.

Hirnbeiss 03-02-2012 07:12 AM

And your charging issue could be the regulator / brush assembly on the back of the alternator. You may want to keep bf away from this job though.

Baby-Benz 03-02-2012 07:45 AM

Thanks for all your advice!
I'll be sure to get my bf to look into all of those possibilities.
He knows this car inside and out, however; some of the problems that occur are just strange and plain weird (a lot thanks to CISE).

Unfortunately Hirnbeiss, he has to fix it, the guys at our local Benz dealers (he worked as an apprentice) have very little knowledge on our car and we don't trust other pop in mechanics. I'm sure with everyone's help he'll be able to figure it out.

Again, thank you for your help.
Keep the advice coming and I'll keep you posted :)

Amanda,if your bf got frustrated with your baby, and redlined it while in nuetral and the car isn't working right, do you think it's wise for your bf to swap a gas engine with a diesel?

guarantee, 3 days into the swap, you'll have a car without an engine in it, a frustrated bf, and $$$ gone.

Just my 2¢

mespe 03-02-2012 07:48 AM

As far as the original issue, have you checked the OVP? Have you pulled any codes? Checked for vacuum leaks?

Baby-Benz 03-02-2012 09:03 AM

Fuses are okay, vac leaks are okay, OVP fuses are okay but doesn't the OVP relay screws up its self internal causing weird electrical faults?, one of the thinner return spring was always broken the one that sits under the air mass meter, checks codes monthly and he has found a dead spot on the potentiometer tracks so that might be an issue too.

As for the frustration it happens... but goes away and he is taking the diesel swap seriously and it'll take place in one shop two hoists side by side.
thanks
Sincerely,
-Amanda

P.S. even with the charger on and batt at 12V ignition on engine off no check lights come on only the abs one comes on none of the other multi coloured ones come on... if this helps.

Oh no, I've been framed! The last 2 posts were from my frustrated half lol.
People get upset, it happens.
I'm the one that keeps him from abusing the car.
If it wasn't for me loving it just a bit more than him, I'm doubtful it'd still be around and kickin'.
We both love the car and I know that the Diesel swap will work out.
We've had the car for about 2 and a half years and we have been able to overcome a lot of difficult problems.

With everyone's help I'm sure we can handle what ever comes our way.

We really appreciate every bit of advice and tips you have to offer. Thank you so, so much for your time and help.
We'll keep you posted, Thanks again.

Sincerely,
Amanda (& the Baby <3)

You're gonna need to get 2 things: a service manual to figure out what's wrong with your car and a facebook for all other miscellaneous posts regarding your other half. That should help you balance things out.

So you're saying your local Mercedes-Benz dealership has very little knowledge about one of their own products?!?!?! Is that something they actually said to you, or ????? Something doesn't sound quite right here!

Baby-Benz 03-02-2012 10:57 AM

My bf worked there for quite a while. Only 1-2 of the older guys working there knew a good deal about our car. A lot of the techs are younger (20's-mid30's) and concentrate on the newer models which make up the majority of their business. They also lack a lot of the diagnostic tools that are required for our car. There is a shop that works on older Mercedes vehicles, but their prices are extremely high. My bf and I have champagne dreams on a tap water budget, so money plays a large role in who does what, where, on our car.
Thusly we are here looking for help cause experience has shown that forums tend to have better (free) advice xD

Thanks
-Amanda

I understand the alternator might be toast... But still no dash indicator lights?

Baby-Benz 03-03-2012 12:22 AM

I did some researching and others say it could be the thin alternator wire breaks within the plastic tubing... it could of happened when the engine revved.
