WHAT a DEAL!!! or is it?
Just got a 380 SE from my neighbor for $300 with a motor that was overheated. He says shop told him car has blown head gaskets, maybe warped heads too. Does anyone have experience with overheated motors and how bad the damage usually is? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Woody

Even if you had to put three grand in an engine, where esle can you drive $40K worth of engineering for so little? How's the rest of the car?

My mechanic had a 420sel that was severely overheated. It was rebuilt and ran a few days before a piston disintgrated. I'd suggest new pistons if it was severely overheated - if you go for the the rebuild - the extra cost for pistons for peace of mind is worth it.

Sounds like a candidate for a engine swap. Just find a used motor and put it in(the same or similar motor). I think that would more cost effective than trying to rebuild the current motor. That is if the rest of the car is good. Do not forget to find out why it overheated in the first place. Frequently that is a sign of poor maintenance. Hope that is not the case and you get it back on the road soon.

Talk to the local hot-rod guys about the popular 380SE / 454 Chevy engine swap.
