You need to replace it before it won't turn at all because you have to turn it to position 1 to release it. Otherwise you have to cut the entire steering lock assembly out. If you do manage to turn to position 1, you insert a piece of coat hanger with a mildly sharpened tip into the two small holes in the perimeter of the tumbler to release the cover and tumbler. FWIW the official tool is a piece of heavy wire bent into a "U" shape and is inserted into both holes at once.

If you can't turn it plan on spending a little money. Where are you located? I know of one guy in the middle Ga area that can drill them out.

My 88 300CE's died last Oct. My dealer service mgr. told me just what duxthe1 says. If it won't turn, it'll cost you. Dealer labor is 5 hrs. I was told they have to remove the instrument cluster and the panel and grind off the linkage to the ignition and then replace parts. So, I figured right then it would be about a grand. Didn't disappoint. 926.00 out the door. ;)

Dealer ordered new lock & key from the VIN. New key won't open the doors and trunk. Re-ordered a new one, figuring a manufacturing error.\. Same result. Dealer comes to the conclusion that the car had been rekeyed by an MB dealer with an entirely new set. Finally sent my master key back with the ignition to get the ignition cut to match my key. Otherwise, it would have been back to the 60's with two keys. Who needs that.
Be careful to avoid a 2 key ending.

Right now you have a statue. :o
