removal transmission W 124

When I remove the automatic transmission (722,5) in the car W 124 E320 1994 is it possible to only disconnect the drive shaft at the transmission or do I need to disconnect at the support bearing.

Are you removing the engine/transmission as an assembly? If you are just removing the transmission then I would remove the complete driveshaft to get it out of the way. If you are removing the engine/transmission together then you should be able to do it with just removing the front flex disc.

Only removing the transmission, the only concern by removing the complete driveshaft is getting vibration but I guess I have to be carefully and mark it up in a way so the assembly is as it was before disassembly.

I pulled one out yesterday, just get the flex disc out and there is plenty of room to drop it.

Was all of the bolts (17mm) accessible from under the car? or must I remove exhaust to get to the top bolts

I had to drop the exhaust on my 722.3 so I would imagine you are going to have to as well.

Mercedes drive shafts produced from late 1982 onward have a built in alignment marking on both pieces. One piece has a line and the other has two lines with a gap between. The line on one should align between the two on the other. These markings are found in the middle by the carrier bearing/splines where the shaft comes apart.

A long extension(s) and flexible 17mm socket are all that is needed. I'm not saying there is a lot of room to do it though. Un-doing the middle exhaust hanger will give a little more angle, but I didn't drop the whole exhaust .

Thanks guys for your input now I have some different angles to attack the problem next week I will pull the transmission from the car I start my summer holiday then. I also try to overhaul the 722,5 transmission with no reverse.
