Strong gas smell inside car while running

A friend has a 1990 190E 2.6 that she cannot drive because the smell is so strong. Does anybody know of possible places to check or has had a similar problem.

I assume you mean raw gas smell. Some common areas that leak
1. Bad hose at the fuel filter outlet.
2.Remove your air filter box and look at the EHA valve. Where it meets the fuel distributor, the seals could be leaking.
3.Small rubber hose from the fuel pump to the metal line

most likely the eha. i had the same problem....even if you can reach your hand under the eha you may feel the moisture from fuel leaking. good luck

x3 on EHA valve. Another possibility is the fuel pressure regulator.

Both these items go bad with symptoms of fuel smell. Replace EHA with a new one. Same with fuel pressure regulator.

Thank you for your suggestions, gives me a place to start. By the way......What is an EHA
I will post the outcome of my investigation.

meaning if someone had they may have accidentally drilled holes in the fuel tank

Mother-in-law had the same problem. I went over to look and found a gas cap that was on the car but not tightened down.

EXACTLY, happens more often than one would suspect, as gas lines are routed external to the cabin, any fumes are most likely dissipated in the passing air.

sounds def like either a leak or the Fuel Pressure Regulator to me as well..

The fuel filler necks go on these things and can leave a pretty strong smell, too. Did this start after a fill up?
