Check Engine Light - 1995 SL320

My check engine light came on last night. What do you use to check the code(s)? I am sure this is pre-OBDII.

That car was ODB2 ready, so look for that connector beneath the steering column

The egr tube has a history of plugging up at the intake manifold end on this application.

To access the connector what do I do? I removed 2 Phillips screws at the top edge of the carpet on the panel and 2 hex head screws about mid way back yet it seems very firmly in place. Also, it seems as though the 'collar' around the steering column is attached to the panel as well.

Is that something that is rectified by replacing it or cleaning it?

It is time consuming to clean it out. If you try to do it in place you won't be able to thoroughly clean it out. May be easier to just replace it.

Must be a dealership only part. I did not see it listed here.

[97 SL320]

The OBD 2 connector on my 97 is on the hush panel above the drivers right ankle, 1/2 way front to back, the cover flips open to gain access. Part of the OBD2 standard is no tool needed accessibility from the drivers seat.
