w202 transmission obnoxiousness
I have a 202 kompressor with 722.6 stuck in limp mode, model year 99 (10/98 mfg.) with 232,000mi. It will start off in 2nd gear, 1st if in sport program, and shift until 3rd where it sticks. Consistently sets code 147 in EGS as read with star machine.
I know that the trans isn't actually slipping, for a while I could put it in drive and then pop it down to fourth before the first shift and would then have all 5 gears and be able to drive relatively normally, only rough shifts due to shift program override, but I can no longer do even that. The trans was recently swapped for a used unit, with clean fluid and filter. I am using Valvoline Max Life high mileage, which says it is NAG-1 approved and actually used to be on the MB fluid sheet too. It has a new sensor plate and e-plug, and all the solenoids tested good. There was fluid up to the control module in the kick panel, but it looks like someone replaced the module (junkyard numbers on it) and there is no fluid inside it. I have also replaced the selector lever position sensor with MB genuine parts and it reads properly through star machine. I'm thinking that maybe the trans computer is still bad, but I don't want to just throw one in on suspicion. I want to keep the car for a while, but if it needs too much work I'm just going to junk it. It's worth more in scrap than what I paid for it. Any ideas?

Maybe someone else add some fuel to this, but I have learned that when making a 722.6 swap with a like model car. One must take the shifter and Transmission Computer too. If you made the swap with another Kompressor tranny, I think their is two flavors of the 722.6. In the W140 line five flavors of the 722.6.The W210 three flavors.

Many "bone yard" trans computers are of the same part number, BUT...
They must also be from the EXACT model car, otherwise the internal program might be for different tire sizes & rear differential ratio.

I'm honestly not sure about the matching situation with the module and trans. I got this one from a customer who supplied the used transmission and decided to give up on it when it didn't work. Because of this I don't even know what the trans came out of. It did come with a module, but as I remember it the yard sent a traction systems module rather than the trans module, I am going to try to find it today, it's been about 6 weeks since I originally did the work so it wandered off somewhere else in the shop.
As far as the shifter, I don't remember those needing to be matched to the units, since it is just a voltage coded sensor and not an actual module. I know I've replaced them before with no problems without having to match numbers. mbdoc, do you know if I can reprogram the module using HHT-WIN module in the DAS? I remember being able to do it through the newer SDS versions somehow. Thanks for the tips, it might just be better to let this one go, but I'm going to give it just a bit longer.

No, you can't re-program..Beckmann tech can.
You can program a newer version 1 time with DAS, but not that old of a car.
