o2 sensor...does a 1987 300E really need one?

It's a serious question, as mine doesn't have one (yanked by previous owner, i guess). But with unleaded fuels on this old engine, is this wise? Or should i get one install it back into the system?
thanks in advance

Removing it is going to throw the EHA completely out of whack. There are non-O2 sensor CIS systems, but your 87 should have the O2 sensor. The EHA needs it to function properly. I don't get why someone would remove it...

thanks for that. I read on another forum that people did that when non-leaded fuel came on the market. Anyway, i will look for one now, for sure. Would you say this could explain the rough running when it's hot? And the fact that the plugs are black?
thanks again.

Maybe someone stole it. Yes, this affects the fuel mixture, and a rich mixture gives black plugs.
