300te without a check engine light....no CEL?

Anyone heard of this...the car is in California(I believe a CA car forever) has a 16 pin port, but no CEL on the dash. Smog guy wouldn't pass her on the visual inspection though #'s are good.

Should this 1992 300te have one? It is a friend's car and this is the first time she had a problem at any smog shop.

I have the VIN if someone can look it up that way too.

Thanks!

IIRC my federal version 92 TE did not have the c/e light but a california version should. That said, they should not be able to fail a federal version for not having a light given that was the original equipment. I remember having this conversation at the emissions station years ago but they had already stopped failing cars for the absence of the c/e light in my location. I believe it is mentioned in the "Intro to Service" manual for 92, if you'd need to present documentation to state your case.

I'd find another smog shop.

I live in California with a Federal 320CE. I have never had a problem passing smog. I would change shops or have your indie handle it like I do.

The "O2-Sensor" and "CHECK ENGINE" lamps have identical wirings. Have the same function with a different names.
"O2-Sensor" - from MY1986 up to MY1987
"CHECK ENGINE" - from MY1988

The US-version models (code 49/1 in the data-card) do not have "CHECK ENGINE" lamp from MY1992.

N.B. The California-version models have code 49/4 in the data-card.
