can a reallt bad valve cover leak cause a plug to foul?
 
can a bad valve cover gasket leak onto a spark plug causing it to foul? thanks steve?

I think the answer depends on the engine. In the 110 engine used in the 280e the spark plugs reside in deep valleys which tend to fill with oil when the valve cover gaskets leak. At least that is what happened with mine.

The plug will have an oily shank, but oil can't get into the combustion chamber that way if the plugs are properly installed.

Plugs tell a story of what is going on in your combustion chamber. If they are fouling, it is because there is some type of combustion abnormality. External oil leaks cannot make a plug foul.
