1991 560SEL passenger side low beam out!

tried replacing the light bulb, no joy, both high beams come on but when I turn the stalk to lo beams, only the driver's side light works. any ideas?

Check the fuses, each side and both high and low beams are on different fuses

OK, I checked the fuses in the fuse box, they don't appear to be burnt out. What else could be the problem?

If you have the standard US lights, check the headlamp sockets. My sister had the SAME problem in her 190E w/ stock US lights (high beams worked fine, low beam on driver side only, brand new bulbs). The insulation material in one of the plugs melted/broke (brittle) and lost continuity.

Replaced the plug and all was well. I don't know if you have to resolder them or splice in the new socket/plug, my mechanic did the work.

Thank you for the information. The plug does look old, one of the light bulb connectors/holders snapped off due to old age so this may be the problem. I'm going to order new ones for both sides.....after install I will post an update.

PS also checked the voltage for both fuses for the lo beams with my multimeter, they both read 11.88 (thereabouts).

Thumbs up

The multiswitch inside the car could be bad or the large relay under the hood. I have had both of those fail.

Voltage reading means crap until there is load. I had an issue with fog lights being out. Guess what? Voltage was fine! Threw me off. The issue was with amps, voltage was fine but just not enough juice. For me it was the headlight switch that was bad.

I have US housings if you want the parts/plugs. I just have people send me an empty flat-rate box with all the return info and stamped. Basically ship me a pre-paid/addressed return box and I will send em off free to you. Just need to know the exact plugs needed. The housings themselves are not in the best of shape. Old and cracked a little. Fog parts already gone (reflectors installed in my Euro sets).

OK, it was the plug that the headlamp plugs into. I ended up buying some knock offs from NAPA. It had to be spliced in, no big deal and now the lights work perfectly!
