Oil Change on a C220 Problem!

I changed the oil filter and drained the oil on a C 220 1996. I started it this morning and there was so much noise form the motor it was not even funny. It made me really afraid so I shut it off immediatly. What could it be? Valves? No oil running through?

PLEASE let me know, I am not sure what to do.

Thanks,
Ryan

Did you have oil pressure?

Did you start the car right after you did the oil change, or was the this morning the first time since the service? If it was the first time, it does take a second or two for the oil to get flowing again and I'm not sure how long you let it run. I always change my oil hot, and then start it right when I'm done with the service in hopes that the heat that is still in the engine will help the oil flow more quickly and have never had a problem.
What did your oil pressure gauge say this morning?
What does the dipstick read?

Thanks for the response. Yes, that was the first time i started it. I hurried up and tured it off after I heard that. I don't know if I should have let it run. There is no preassure gage on the C220 so I am not sure of the oil preassure. Being that the car was fine until I changed it, I am assuming that is the problem.

Let me know what else you think.

Thanks a lot,
Ryan

Start it again if...

If it was running fine before you changed the oil & if the dipstick reads full & if the new oil filter is tightly sealed & you didn't do anything else but an oil service I'd start it again and let it run. If the sound doesn't go away after 15-30 seconds shut it off, there's another problem. To me it just sounds like the oil just needs a couple seconds to start pumping again.
In the future, change the oil while its hot, and then start the car when the service is done, it has always worked for me.
Let me know how it turns out.

I agree. Start it RIGHT after changing the oil.

1. You need to fill the filter and recheck the oil. You're probably down a half litre or so.

2. Pumping fresh warm oil to the top end is always a good idea.

After servicing my car, I also take it for a "road-test" drive, and then re-check the oil once more.

Thanks, I let it run and the noise stopped. From now I will remember to change the oil when it is hot. Thanks a lot for the info.

If its cold, and your car's not warm...

If its cold, and your car's not warm...and you change the oil, and let it drain for like 30 minutes....once you refil it, it takes time for the oil to settle, otherwise you'll have the problems you faced. I've had a simliar situation in the past, and have never changed the oil with a cold engine again...
