Opinion on 1999 MB 320E 4matic w/97K Wagon

Hi Guys,

I am looking to purchase a 1999 Mercedes Benz 320E 4matic wagon with 97K. The asking price is $6,500 but I think I can get it for $5,000. Clean car fax no accidents. It was an estate car garaged kept according to the seller who worked for the wealthy owner. He said it was dealer serviced by the original owner but has no history or records. He is selling because his wife wants a new car and was going to trade it in but the dealer wasn't offering him much. Second owner it has a quite a few door dings and dents but nothing too bad for a 14 year old car. Everything works. New A/C compressor. There is condensation in one of the headlights so that might have to be replaced.

I would appreciate any opinions Were there any major issues with that year and model car? Is there anything I should be checking before making a deal? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated asap. He is not doing a hard sell at all but is trading it in two days if it is not sold. I am looking for a fairly reliable second car! Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Bob K

Have someone do a proper inspection unless $5K is pocket change. No service records is a pretty big red flag for a Mercedes. 100K is a milestone for service on a W210. If not already done, expect MAF, O2 sensors, cat issues, plugs, motor mounts and transmission/differential/transfer case service as possible. If all that was needed you'd be looking at $4000 at a dealer so get an inspection.

Bob, I agree with paying for a thorough pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by a MB-trained tech who knows that vintage vehicle and its weak points. If you find out which dealer serviced that wagon contact their Service Department and ask about the service history. They may share service information with you.

The 210 cars can have spring perch rust issues so be sure to have them inspected closely.
