M120 engine timing procedure how to

Hi I'm not sure how to move a thread that I started in a different forum..this one seems more appropriate.

Does anyone have the procedure on how to install new timing chains and put the engine back into timing for the M120 V12?

I have an ALL Data account and its frustrating me and states

"Mercedes Benz does not provide precise timing marks for the camshafts. Correct engine timing is achieved when certain conditions are met."

This statement is ridiculous as I highly doubt you can just set the cams and crank anywhere and install the chain and they dont mention what those conditions are.

My Ebay manuals don't provide the info either.

if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it. I'd be willing to pay also if someone has the real procedures and diagrams to do this. Thank you

A user on this forum named(do a search) roncallo. He has put a 120 into a old SL. He could possibly could help you. I know the SL thread is long on the conversion, and he tweaked that engine a lot on that thread.

Best of luck,

Martin

Hmm

To answer this question I need:
* Year.
* Model.
* VIN#.

The data you are asking for is VIN# locked in WIS.

.

Alldata sure has it. In Engine-Camshaft-Testing and inspection you'll find checking camshaft basic settings and checking camshaft timing. See pic.
Just remember, camshafts have to be in retarded position!

I've clicked there and all other related sections. non of their procedures show you how to line marks up they state there are no marks. Their procedure shown also assumes your original chains are there and currently in time. I have purchased an M120 that is completely disassembled.

I don't have a VIN# since the engine was purchased by itself and is disassembled however it is from a 1997 SL600
