shiffter makes a grinding sound?

please help i have a 92 190 e when i put it in drive it will make a grinding sound ? it seems like it's coming from the shiffter but if i move it around it will stop ? what can it be???? please help..
I'm giveing the car to my 16 year old little girl and i don't need any problems with it .....thanks.
