DIY Spark Plugs on 2000 E430 4MATIC (119,000 miles)
 

Assuming, without conceding, that I am a novice (sure I've changed oil, filters, fuel and water pumps, hoses), is it a fair statement that changing the spark plugs on this vehicle is beyond my technical and recommended level of ability? I would like to do this myself, if possible. Thanks, CJ

I think all you need is patience and a few tools. The job is much easier if you have a swivel (aka universal) attachment for your socket set. Also, A Hazet 2771 (MB Part 110-589-01-01-00) 17mm open end wrench or equivalent to pry off spark plug boots without damaging them.

New plugs come coated with an anti-seize compound so no need to use your own.

Thank you. I appreciate that immensely. I do have two sets of Benz "tools" from the 300E and 400E with some wrenches. Do you know if the 17mm open end wrench are included in either of those sets. In any event, my understanding is any decent 17 mm open-ended wrench can be used. I do not have the universal swivel for the socket, but I think those are relatively common as well. Thanks, again. The secret of the Hazet is that it has an offset (aka 'dog leg') on the handle. That allows one to press against the engine but you are right that any 17mm open end would grip the ridge at the end of the boot. Perhaps a small block of wood would be useful when using a straight handled wrench.

I have accumulated all of the u-joints and various lengths of extensions over the years. The plugs can be somewhat difficult to access, but I would not say that it is technically difficult. If you dont mind adding a few pieces to your tool collection you should be able to get through it with just some patience.

Thank you Douge and RichardM98. I probably need a longer extension for my socket. As far as the Hazet wrench, I assume the "angle" is such that it allows the right amount of pressure to be placed "vertically" or "perpendicularly" to the motor when prying. There are "angled" open-ended wrenches, but query whether the angle on the standard ones are correct. I'll take a look at what I have and what I need in light of the actual job. If worse comes to worse, after researching some more, I will acquire good plugs for the job and then have my mechanic show me. Thanks again for responding. You have both been very helpful.

I have that engine in an '01 ML, and besides the engine being crammed in that space, it has WAY too many spark plugs!!! :eek:

Like 16 platinum bosch. Gotta put those on layaway!

CJ, refer to the Owner's Manual for the proper spark plugs.

In most cases the plugs listed in the owners manual for a 13 year old car are no longer made. However, you can check the Bosch USA website to find the equivalent model plug available today.

Thanks to all for responding. The reason I referred to Bosch is because I looked up the part on this website for the DIY projects for the particular model car. I'll be sure to put the right plugs if/when I do this. I may even just order / buy them from a dealer.

I did get the molding panel clips for the loose molding on the driver's side and will replace them tonight. I looked it up on the EPC site and then re-confirmed at the dealer, who looked it up on the same site, by examining the diagrams of the car. Awesome stuff. BTW the dealer charged me the same price as the EPC or ECP site price, no mark-up at all and no shipping.
