HEEELLPP 91 mercedes 300E
Just bought a car. What does it mean when there is gray sludge in the water reservoir of a 91 mercedes 300E? Oil is NOT milky.

sound like your head gasket is blown and hopefully the heads are not cracked sorry.
|
Yup, gray sludge would be oil residues. Could be from a previous issue that was then fixed, or could be from current issues. How does the engine run? Losing any oil or coolant? Exhaust smell/look normal?

I once had brown gritty stuff in my coolant. It turned out to be Redline
Water Wetter not a blown HG. |
If the head gasket is original, it is most likely blown. That engine is notorious for a head gasket which had a weak spot in the design. Replacement gasket is said to be "new and improved", so it won't happen again.

It could have been fixed though and then they just never cleaned the tank i noticed the same in mine after I did the gasket and it took a lot to clean it all the way out. but it was worth it it really helped. Drain and clean the coolant.
