Hi everybody ! I have a '77 w123 240D and it has an oil cooling radiator . Only problem is that it is cold all the time . My question is : does the oil pass through the cooler all the time , pushed by the pump , or is there some sort of thermostat ? The cooler is cold even after city driving ... Can anyone tell me how the oil is circulating , and if i should be worried about the cooler being cloggeg or something ?

There is a thermostat in the oil filter housing. Once it opens, oil should circulate through the cooler. I would not worry because the 240D I used to drive always had a cold oil cooler too and according to the person it was sold to, its still running without any problems.

Thanks for your answer ! I suppose it's ok to consider that in winter (i'm from Romania and the temperatures average now 10 deg. Celsius) the oil thermostat won't open ...

cristi - I live in Georgia
southern United States that is - and drive the 300D and 240D during hot weather. It is my opinion that the thermostats have never opened since I have been driving them. I do not have a clue what temperature the oil filter thermostat opens at.
