hi, ý got a w124 300e 1986 european at 180 K miles
around 30 miles there's a low humming noise coming from the diff.
+ around 70 miles a vibration starts with a spinning felt component like shaft or bearings.I 've checked the tyres ,wheels,
bearings. they seemed tobe ok.
any advice will be apreciated. thanks in advance.:confused:

Try rear alignment? Toe in adjustment?

Drag links?

Suspension bushings?

Leaking shocks/ struts?

Old Differential fluid?

I'd check on rear toe in alignment. don't want rear tires pointing in too much like this.... / \

IF rears face forwards like that, not good.

It is not a camber up down, its a toe adjustment. IT can make a wobbling noise/ vibration.

I'm having mine checked out soon...

Find a place that can do a 4 wheel full alignment on a mercedes. if you havent had this done already, I don't think it can hurt...

Definately have it checked though, I would...

Good morning. Humming from the differential if it hasn't gone too far is probably fluid related. Just figured out the problem on mine, same symptoms as yours including the vibration and found my fluid very low which is why I'm at the site. I haven't replaced the seal yet but I did top it off..(14mm allen wrench) and got rid of both the hum and vibration. I hope this helps.

hý, thanks for your precious replies. I will check immediately the diff.fluid level. do u suggest that ý have to change it all or just top it. I have had full alligment one week ago ,all ok.My rear shocks are little bit soft?Thanks again :)

I would check the rear toe in as well, but fluid is one of the main things I would check and or top off.

Rather top it off to see if it helps, then change it if needed.

I've been chasing the same problem for several months on my 82 240D (114K). I've done the following:
New motor mounts, Drive shaft mount, new shocks, rotated and balanced tires faithfully, Topped of differential, checked for bad boots or other signs grease, and everything seems to be tight. Also checked for broken tire belts, and replaced one back tire that had started cupping on the front. Allignment seems very good on front and I do not detect any unusual wear on the back tires. I still get this "bottom wobble" from 30-40 mph. out of the rear end. I'am running Goodyear Regattas with around 24K on them. I'am hoping we can both learn something on this one. Thanks a bunch!
