1991 420SEL Idle Solenoid / EPC ??
I was reading on some other threads about the fuel injection system and overhaul or rebuild of the "tower of doom".
In that discussion there was some written info and I have a question or two. When I pulled my fuel system, intake manifold, and heads, I had a configuration that does not quite look like EPC. In EPC group 07 subgroup 070 it shows the idles solenoid, a couple of elbows, a plastic tube, and a rivet. My VIN; WDBCA35E7MA600593 Again, when I disassembled my engine I had elbow #399, tube #405, elbow #432, & of course the solenoid #336. My old elbow #339 that came off did not resemble the one in the drawing in that it did not have two small branches coming off of it, one to the left and one to the right. It had one branch pointing to the left of the engine and the plastic tube #405 was connecting this 90 degree elbow to the elbow #432. There was no rivet #402 used as there was no where for it to reside. When I reassembled the engine I ordered new parts including the rivet, both elbows, and the plastic tube. I actually received two of the plastic tubes by mistake. Not knowing any better I cut the plastic tube down so that there was no crimp remaining as that is the way my engine was assembled. I am sure that EPC's drawing is goofed up as there is no mention or depiction of what the plastic tube would connect to if it were actually coming out of the right side of the elbow. And the rivet of course is to plug a hole to prevent air flow to something else that I don't have. In the recent thread on the other forum the owner states that this tube is crimped during manufacture. My question is this; There is obviously a design change and some re-thinking in the idle speed solenoid area since 1991 when my car was manufactured. At one time D.B. thought that there should be a small amount of air travel from the idles speed actuator #363 to the idle speed solenoid. Since the new tube is crimped shut on one end the air travel is now eliminated for some reason due to this design change. This seems odd as the 90 degree elbow coming up from the injection system boot (chamber) (& also new) and into the rear of the idle solenoid has the right side branch now missing, it seems like they could have removed the left side branch as well and eliminated this plastic tube. My elbows are both new. In fact I replaced all the rubber around the engine except the vacuum side around the master cylinder area which is coming soon and a different issue. (I will be adding components and installing new vacuum system lines & reservoir in order to add the vacuum-adjust portion of the Euro Bosch headlights coming soon). I am wondering if there was a service letter that came out to introduce this change so that I could verify that I have the correct components. I am also wondering if my engine was just plain botched up when it was reassembled during head replacement back in 2007 before it went in to storage. Since the crimp should be there does it matter which way the crimp is installed. It is essentially a dead end tube to prevent air flow but I would feel better installing it as the maker intended. N.A. 1991 420SEL (not California as far as I can tell). Any guidance would greatly be appreciated. jimm1009 |

I should have added the drawing and parts list.
Sorry about that! A trip to the salvage yard this afternoon yielded results as EPC would dictate. That '87 420SEL had the tube with the crimp on it and the crimp was pointing to the rear of the car. I installed my 2nd new tube (with crimp intact) but have not had time to drive it and see what happens, if anything. jimm1009 Last edited by jimm1009; 04-07-2013 at 09:27 PM. |
