W124 Dash Removal Tools
 

I'm heading to a Pick & Pull lot this weekend to pull a W124 dash (if I'm lucky enough to find it crack free). It drives me crazy working outside of my home shop because I inevitably forget a tool, or think I won't need a tool, and find that I do need it. I know that recalling a complete list of the needed tools would be a tall order, but can anyone recall a special tool, or an out of the ordinary one, that I should be sure to pack? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Torx to remove the airbag and a 10 mm allen with good leverage to get the steering wheel off, a 10mm 1/4" drive socket with extension to get the passenger airbag out of dash. A pick tool as wells as a tiny phillips and regular phillips along with 8, 10, and 13 mm sockets and wrenches. A long 4mm allen will get the center vent out. Needlenose are handy to get the large nut off the light switch. Cant think of much more, I just pulled a dash to do an evaporator so its pretty fresh in my head.

I would have forgoten the torx and the allen for the steering wheel. It's an '88, so no passenger side airbag to worry about. I forgot about the center vent allen as well.
I'm glad I asked and I appreciate your help. The yard is about 40 miles from my home so it's not like I can just cross the street to get the right tools. Much appreciated!!

Don't forget hooks to pull the gauge cluster and 4 long needles to remove the side vents if you want to save them.

Don't bother with an '88 dash. It'll crack before long. Find the latest year dash in an acceptable color with or without passenger airbag as you need. In fact, it might be possible to put a glove box in place of the airbag if your car doesn't have a passenger airbag.

A coat hanger and a pair of pliers to make "special tools" if you want the instrument cluster out at any point...

Thanks for the tips guys. It helped. At the end of the day the only thing I forgot was my 3/8" to 1/2" adaptor for my allen socket (for the steering wheel) to the breaker bar. I was lucky enough to find a pipe to use for leverage. The dash was in great shape for a 25 year old part. it had a hair line crack from each side of the speaker hole to the windshield. Only about an inch long. The rest was perfect. Not bad for eleven bucks!

You Pull R Parts in Rosemount. They also have one in Blaine. They have several 190E's at the moment and just got an '88 260E in on 4/26. Not in too bad of shape.

My 260 is going to need air con evap and so forth so I am destined for a dash job this summer too. Mine is in good shape, but there are a few other small things. I'm going to check out the pick and pull now that the weather is good!

The good thing about living in Minnesota is that you don't see too many cracked dashes on any car no matter the age. The number of days they spend baking in the sun is pretty limited...:mad:

LOL, sad but true; what a winter, glad it's finally done.
I'm looking forward to the dash job as well. I'm not sure that the evap is bad, but I'm certain that all but one of the vacuume pods are junk.
