Pull the engine or just transmission? 400E

I recently bought back my 1992 400e. It now has 193,000 miles and typical no reverse, everything else (for the most part) is minor maintenance issues.

The opinion I am looking for is it easier just to pull the engine with the tranny or just jack it way up and pull the tranny and leave the engine. I am going to swap the tranny with a rebuilt.

There are several things that could be done while its out like gaskets etc. to stop some leaks. I am sure it could use a new rear main seal.

Any advice & experience would be welcomed.....

Thanks!

Unless there is an engine issue, just the trans.

Yes, both are very nasty pieces. With my M103 and since I have a lift, I would be inclined to pull both. But if I had to do yours in my garage, I think I would go just transmission. You have to get it high off the ground though. You need room to work and to slide it out then in. That slide out and in is a good two man job, probably best done with a light duty transmission jack.

To do a transmission I use really long wobble socket extensions like 2ft long or longer in total. Drop the rear trans mount and pull the flex disc to sag the trans as much as you can. I guide the socket onto the bolt with one hand and turn the ratchet with the other.

It sucks, but its doable. I've never done a 400E but I've done 190E 2.6 which is super tight as well.
