This is a basic video I just saw. If a smog shop cant tell if your convertor is good, move on.
I would bring it to someone who is good with mercedes or european cars. Pep boys or any other chain I would avoid.
I pretty much had the same feelings & did some calling but need to do more.

Pep Boys did say they can't test CC's.
You're right some techs no matter how certified will have limited experience with 30 year old cars.

Problem is I need to choose state approved smog repair stations in order to qualify.

I may have to ask Enrique again. Maybe he can help confirm the fuel ratio adjustment so I can make sure its done right.

I can't epect a smog repair stations to deal with old vacumns.
I'll have to work on that in near future.

Thanks for your input.

Great idea....wonder if I can set up a candy thermometer?

This is funny!

Finding Engine Vacuum Leaks With A Cigar - YouTube

I just don't know how to test for vac leaks & I don't want to try spraying intake cleaner on my rubber parts.

What about UV dye?

I'll try to get all the bigger rubber pieces changed out.

Interesting on leaner because of leaks. will have to try to get thinigs tightened

Seems I may need to get a Temporary operating permit. Then I would assume I could use the car for the DMV road test.

Yeah...

Guess we'll get this beast straightened out

Interesting about taking temps of exhaust system.

Still couldn't a cat get hot enough bu8t still not work correctly?

Nox needs to be run artificially rich///in contrast to HC & CO which are best lean...

I'm tempted to get a temp gun.
Inteesting to see the temps of exhaust system areas esp cylinders.

Still isn't it possible a cat heats up but still doesn't work properly?

My mechanic has a temp gun

Don't worry about the cats until you have identified and repaired the vacuum leaks and adjusted the fuel mixture properly---waste of time. Mark

Points taken just I need to be up to speed or at least versed in the emissions systems as I'm trying to avoid shops that just want to throw parts on & then see what happens.

If I knew my cat was ok I could give full attention to changing these rubber parts.

My guy doesn't like playing with my car.
I know that they can make so much $ in the time they spend getting parts.

I guess first thing is getting the temp operating permit
2 plus hour waits at DMV
No appointments for at least a week.

Arrrgh

Wow, after all that can go wrong I'm just glad she runs
Sometimes my head just spins not knowing what direction to go first.

purple line disconnected at each front light area.

looks like the line goes inside the pass comp.
My guess is remnants of old euro headlights.

If these lines are open then it would cause a vac leak???
Maybe plugging them would get my econ guage pinned 0????

golf teees are ideal

That would be great

oh well back under the hood.

Also armed with temp gun to measure exhaust ports.

tried to do cats at idle 1000 rpm last night but didn't get any hot areas in cat.

I pushed down w 3mm hex on fd tower & it slowed & got bit lumpy...is it too rich?
should it just slow a tad? How much do you push down?

Don't want to mess too much there but have been trying to tighten the vacs?

Plugged purple lines(old headlights euro)?

No change in econ guage

Checked cat temps again at idle could not find them any hotter.

Checked temp of exhaust ports most in 270 range but found 2 in rear to be hotter??? 350 375..F?

Wonder what that means

arggh

Have to check again

Smile Update passed smog

2 yrs ago Kartek North Hollywood did some airflow fuel ratio adjustment (guess I really got it wrong trying to do it by ear...some things best left to the pros)

She passed last smog on her own without repairs.

Smog is due again...
