Also, if it "times out" it will put up the reduced brake warning and MB will replace it for free.

Well, I hope to have my 06 CDI for a long time, so I guess I'll learn as I go observing the SBC system. I'm comfortable with it, versus what a pricier '08/'09 Bluetec would have cost me, so I'll play it by ear.

If the OP can get a better description from his Wife - perhaps he'll post it up. That's the unexplained issue of concern here.

Actually, if the system fails, the "reduced braking" warning will be displayed, in RED, on the cluster. Anyone who has ever experienced this (it's happened to me twice) will agree that there is indeed much greater effort required to stop the car!

When the hydraulic unit has nearly reached the end of it's service life, or "times out", "Service Brake/Visit Workshop" is displayed in white. In this case a fault code is stored in SBC, instructing (as per SDS) the tech to check the operating time of the hydraulic unit. After this check is carried out the tech is then instructed to either update the SBC software, or, replace the hydraulic unit.

I hope this helps explain how the SBC system works.

I had an 05 E320 in that had "timed out" with the Service Brake/Visit Workshop indication. Sent to dealer and it was replaced at no charge to the owner. She actually told me it was a good experience dealing with them.
