86 sdl lack of power / black smoke

Well after driving my sdl from OK to kansas city . It has lack of power on take off. Less power than a ford festiva .

I have tried the diesel purge aux tank method to not much luck .

I have to give the car a shot of spray to get it to start . And once it's warmed up it will start back once shut off. If left to cool down I have to spray again. Car shows 265xxx on odometer . I was told by seller only 100k on engine. Starting to have doubts.

I removed the intake hose from the turbo . I tried to turn turbo with my finger . Turbo turned freely .
This is my first turbo car and first mercedes .

Body is in good condition and I would like to have it running right . Even running bad it rides like a dream. So time to replace my old beater jeep .

Wife says to nice to use for my go to work car ( I do hot tar roofing ) . So trying to find another one to buy now .
So any help is appreciated .

You need to compression test the engine.

The most complex systems can fail in the simplest way.

What about the switchover valve located near the master cylinder?

Dr mac:

You may be better served by posting your problem in the Diesel forum; this forum is for gasoline engines.

This was the issue on mine, combined with slipped IP linkage. The 240D I had was a faster car.

Six others from BMW, GM, and Ford.

Change fuel filters if you don't know when they were done last. Black smoke is normally a sign of overfueling, but paradoxically, partial fuel starvation can result in intermittent overfueling and black smoke.

If that doesn't clear up the problem, temporarily rig up a boost gauge and check for proper turbo operation. I'm not sure of the specs for the OM603, but boost under max load and high rpm should be on the order of 10 psi or more. I'm sure exact specs are available here if you search. In the likely event that you aren't getting proper turbo operation, there are some things to check in order to see if the wastegate is getting told when to open and close. Switchover valve mentioned above is one of them. Again, search function is your friend. It's rarely a failure of the turbo itself, rather the control system failing to tell the turbo to provide boost.
