I should mention the car didn't run that great with the CRC stuff in the gas tank. It ran sorta sluggish. As soon as I filled the tank back up, it turned into a little ripper. Second gear scratches on accident.

Thank you.. I have a problem up the same alley, so this little bit of info will help.

Austin apparently requires emission inspections; San Antonio does not. Would you not be able to avoid this altogether and drive south 80 miles for your inspection or maybe just have it done a bit closer in San Marcos or New Braunfels?

Its usually based on your home zip code or at least it was years ago in Florida.

They require it to be inspected in the same county where it's registered.
I thought last year was my last emissions inspection (24 years) but it is 25 years, so this was the last one. I have some plates from 1990 I'm going to register in February when the car turns 25. |

And FL got rid of inspection requirements years ago. Probably to help the Miami-Davie-Pompano used car cottage industry (or however you say that in espanol).

Always look at the O2 content on the emission test report. It's a diagnostic tool. If all systems/components are in good operating condition it should be zero or no more than 0.1 percent O2. Higher O2 can mean the catalyst is degraded (assuming the duty cycle is okay), or it could just be the engine was not fully warmed up.
I go to a drive through station for the California ASM test. I pick mid morning when there is usually no line and take the long way there - about five miles driving the car aggressively and keep it at about 1500 with the AC on full cold to keep load on the engine while I'm filling out the paperwork. NEVER, EVER SHUT OFF THE ENGINE PRIOR TO THE TEST. This is a recipe for failure. If you believe all systems/components are in good working order, but the car still fails the test or only marginally passes, there are additional things you can do including shorting the R16/1 resistor plug, and plugging the vacuum advance. A few years ago I did a number of tests with these components and reported the results here, so just search under my handle. BTW, early in my engineering career I did research on the cause and control of engine emissions, so I know a lot of tricks. Duke |
