1995 E420 Stumble and runs rough after about 10 to 15mins of driving.

Hello all, I have a 1995 E420 that has an electrical gremlin I guess. Car started back in the summer after warming up, running very rough like not firing on all cylinders. Will not start back but backfires through throttle body and strong smell of fuel at exhaust. Let sit a couple of hours start ups fine and runs good again for 10 to 15 mins. I know nothing about Closed loop or Open loop but I do know that I have had to professional mechanics work on the car since July and after throwing parts at it I am really dissapointed we have not gotten any further. Replace MAF sensor in spring, top wiring harness summer, plugs(Double plats), Distributer caps and rotors, plug wires(last night), Tried different ignition modules, coils all same results. I am at a point of not knowing what to do next. I have more money in the car than its worth however it is a nice looking and clean car for 214xxx miles. Any suggestions? Checked 4 fuses on Computer module on passenger side all were good.

OK, well, I guess you can't just drive over to my house; I have a bit of experience with the M119.

How are all your vacuum hoses/connections?

Well I did have a vacuum leak on my EGR valve but I also corrected that. Act like when engine gets to running temp 80C starts shutting down cylinders like its running on 5 or 6 instead of eight. Did I mention I has throttle body rebuilt by business in Oakland Park, FL. I know nothing about the ECU but read a post that said it would shut down 2 cylinders if it heated up or the board had a cold solder. That acts like whats going on. Not sure though. I dont know... just frustrated

Any progress on this problem? When you replaced the plug wires, did you change the resistance boots too (the ones that screw off the plug wires)?

I had random (very infrequent) same type problems in my 93 400e. and the check engine light is on all the time too. I reseated the fuses in the base module, and I loosened and sprayed (pbblaster) the electrical grounds. The check engine light went out and it hasn't stumbled since. However the CE light has decided to let me know that it is still there, so I might try the procedure again, maybe clean other grounds.

These cars are very sensitive to electrical issues. (I had a 400e that started coughing whenever the after market radio was turned on.)

But I think you need to concetrate on what happens after the car warms up. since that's when the problems shows up. you can fool the car into thinking it's not up to temperature to determine if it's electronic or vacuum related.
I would think that if the car thinks it's still warming up, it should run fine would indicate electrical issue, while if it still stumbles when it thinks it still warming up would be vacuum/egr/other emissions.
