Flare nut wrench vs. "crow foot" socket?

Is a flare nut wrench basically the same as a "crow foot" socket?

Just wondering if they are basically interchangable.

They look very, very similar as far as I can tell.

I guess you could use a crowsfoot+ratchet or breaker bar as a flare wrench but the wrench is much handier.

But a crowsfoot will work in places where nothing else will.

...not the same. A flare wrench has five sides rather that the two sides of a crow foot, so the flare wrench gets a better bite on the nut. Using a conventional open end wrench on a flare fitting nut runs the risk of rounding off the hex.

You can buy flare wrench heads that attach to the end of a socket wrench/extensions just like a crowfoot.

Crowfoot flare nut wrench

I have a set of Metric and SAE crowfoot flare nut wrenches and use them often. Very hand tools.
