suitable ATF replacement for Shell 3403m115
Whilst looking around for suitable ATF for my 2000 E320, I got a case of ATF 134 (shell - with the stupid leaking caps)
I looked at the Valvoline Maxlife ATF and its SFU for MB 236.10 (aka shell 3403M115 ATF). This shell spec was a full synthetic ATF with a VI of 185. and a viscosity of 7.3 @100C (the newer 134 is thinner at 6.3- and can cause issues, no experience only repeating what I have heard from transmission repairsmen) This spec is also similar to MAG-1 full synthetic ATF which I can find locally quite cheaply too - 50 dollars out the door for 3 gallons of it. not starting an war here. But after speaking to a few mechanics who repair these NAG1 boxes (in and out of the US) all say that the NAG1 is pretty old now and its oil is no longer a secret sauce. Most manufacturers have even tougher requirements for ATF and thats why there are so many universal ATFs now which also service these MB passenger car transmissions. e.g. the Toyota T-IV was made to work with partial lockup feature of the torque converter (like ours) but its not synthetic. so I refer to this forum for Q/A on this. I however know of one gentleman who I see regularly, he has a 97E320 and had a trans rebuild, he used the MB latest fluid and was as happy as a penguin in the sahara, he then changed it to valvoline maxlife to get the original shift feel back.
