cat removal/230ce

Being a uk resident and owning a pre-92 car, I believe its not necessary to have a cat fitted. My system at the moment does have a cat.
Would replacing it with a non-cat system gain much performance?
If its worth doing, anyone know where I can get a performance exhaust system in the uk?
