What ATF are members using for 722.4xx transmissions (1990 190E 2.6)
I was using DexMerc ATF, but then realized it was for vehicles calling for Mercon IV and I searchedd all the local autoparts store and couldn't find anything that was for Mercon II or III. I looked at the Autozone store brand and it said it was for vehicles calling for Mercon II and III so I got that. Bad idea. After about a month I noticed that my transmission was revving high at take off from a stop (slipping). So today I decided to drain out a liter or so and added some Lucas transmissision anti-slip to it. When I got the fluid out I poured it into a clear water bottle to check it and it was not burned, but it had the viscosity of water! It was not even close to being viscous at all. So now I would like to know what brand of fluid are other members using for their similar transmissions?

I'm using Kroon dexron II in all of my transmissions / gearboxes.

I'm using Mobil Delvac in mine.
Heavy-Duty Transmission Fluid | Mobil Delvac™ Synthetic ATF Remember that there are real Dex II or III fluids made anymore. Any label you see is just a maker's claim, it is not tested against any standard. -J |
I noticed improved shifting (quicker) with Redline D4 after replacing the Dex III that had only 15K on it.

GM does not license the name Dexron 3 anymore hence you cannot see it anywhere now. The most you will find is Dex/merc, which is perfectly fine to use.
I personally have used tractor supply co. ATF and also Brad Penn ATF III-H, both of which were equally good to use. For budget ATF, you can use Same's Club ATF, they also were selling the Penzzoil ATF for about 30 dollars shipped free. Used that in a 2002 chev impala (all 12 qts flush) and it is also running great. |
I use Mobil One in all my transmissions. It doesn't burn stay the same thickness at high temps.I run 80,000 miles instead of 40,000 miles.

Blue bottle Valvoline Dex III in 25k intervals.

what stores? I checked autozone and walmart and both only seem to carry their own store brand and Castrol DexMerc. I want to find a fluid that has somewhat of a high viscosity and is safe to use. The climate here is pretty warm so I want something that will keep its viscosity somewhat thick. Any ideas?

I buy mine at Wal Mart or Autozone.

Valvoline Dexron VI Synthetic in all of ours....except the E320...that has the special MB fluid.

I'm one of two people I know who use this - Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid - Trick Shift ATF meets or exceed Mercon or Dexron III . Sometimes under $5/qt at Amazon. Very sticky stuff. Might have to turn down the modulator.
