Rear flex disc - 1989 300se

I ordered a front flex disc for my car and got a rear one instead so I figured I would replace both. I unbolted the rear flex disc and slid the driveshaft as far forward as possible but I could not get the shaft to drop. Does anyone know what I have to do - disc didn't look bad - is it going to be a big hassle to replace the rear disc? I'm wondering if I should just put it back together. Any insight would be appreciated.

You have only 3 choices:
1. forget the rear disc replacement if it looks okay - my '91 has 240k on the original and it's fine.
2. Unbolt the exhaust and the heat shield and the center bearing support.
3. Unbolt the differential and wiggle it back a bit (ugh!).

Since you're doing the front also, I suggest you do method #2 above. Then you can check out the center bearing and u-joint, and it makes the front disc installation easier. The exhaust can come off in one piece if you support it properly as you lower it. Unbolt it just behind the headers, unbolt the support on the tranny, unhook the o2 sensor wire under the passenger floorboard, and pull the rubber doughnuts off the mufflers. Two guys makes it a lot easier.

Thanks for the reply. Rear flex disc looks fine after 230,000 miles. To unbolt the exhaust system I would have to cut off very rusted nuts and drill out the studs and replace. It doesn't seem like its worth it - hopefully the front flex disc which is the one I really need to replace will be easier.

You should be able to replace the rear flex disc easily. I use a large prybar to pull the coupling off the differential.

I have 332k on my rear flex disk and not one crack. Leave the rear and do the front.

Thanks for the input - I just put everything back together for now but I still have the new rear flex disc and now I know to replace it - I never thought of prying the coupling off - I'm always afraid to destroy something.
