1987 560 sel, tranmission
 

The transmission whines when in neautral or park, but not while in gear. Is this normal? I am looking at buying this car and it was all that is wrong besides the rear suspension.

Wow, that's an odd one. Never had that with any of my 722.3's. If you buy it and fix the issue, let me know how it goes. Just a shot in the dark, what's the fluid level? Overfilled, underfilled?

Did you smell the transmission fluid? If it smells burnt as for $2000 dollars off the price. The transmission is ready to go. How many REAL miles does the car have on it. Let us guess around 80,000 miles we see this a lot on used cars.
