Air filter box clips

On a 103 motor while changing air filter, two of the clips that goes around the box broke. Looks to be due to age/heat making the plastic brittle. Two questions;

Anyone make replacement parts to fix the clips?
How essential are they? Figuring the remaining will likely break in the future.

Thanks

Most of mine broke too. Got another filter housing from a slightly newer w124 at Pic and Pull a few years back. Still intact so far. Cost around $15 back then.

I had broken 2 (out of 6, I think) clips on the air filter box of my now-gone 1997 E420 (M119?). I meant to buy a junkyard replacement box but never got around to it. I probably ran it for 60,000 miles or so and none of the other clips ever broke. My recollection is that it was difficult to get the box apart, and that I probably broke the clips through my own clumsiness. I think you should just keep an eye on it, and don't assume that the others are going to fail.

I have been using one of these polypropylene straps from Ace Hardware to keep the two halves of my air filter housing together for years. It is cheap, easy to install, and it is black, so it doesn't look out of place.
