water pump

i want to change my merc 280se (chasis126) year 83 water pump . i thought it was a simple job(maybe just remove the belting only) then i realized it was`t. so,do i need to remove the radiator?,and also the fan attached with the pump, do i need to remove it?

shrek,

Never did a gas engine, but on a W123 Diesel you have to remove the fan, and once you do that the rest is pretty straight forward.

I have heard people suggest they take the radiator out, but I have never done that. I end up with some extra skin scraped off my fingers and hands but managed to do the job without the hassle of taking the radiator out. I did this once in a parking lot after noticing a puddle of coolant under the car when I came back from shopping. Left the family in the McDonalds, found a water pump at a local parts store, and went back to McDonalds and did the job with the kids and wife watching from the window.

I believe there are 4 bolts that hold the fan on, and once it is off, getting a wrench into the area to remove the pump is not the same challenge it is with the fan on. Couple hours the first time you do it, if you have the parts in hand.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Jim

the 4 bolts that u mention i believe is not holding the fan...in my car.....there are center bolt(which is no one can see...located front center of the fan) and i just wondering.....if i could take out the bolt without take out the radiator......

shrek,

I think there is another thread on this forum that speaks to the way to get your bolt off. I remember it says to get the shroud off and then proceed to the fan. The shroud around the radiator is apparently held on with clips. Try a search for the subject too, I am sure there are lots of members who have addressed the issues you are facing before. Good Luck, Jim
