w210; Nitrogen sphere replacement; How effective might this be?

2002 E320S4 (4Matic wagon) with 155k miles: The ride is hard; not bouncy, but harsh, felt more in the after end. Suspension is all original. Shop says small fluid leakage weepage seen at shocks. Some have suggested that the spheres should be replaced, typical at this age. So, I stopped in the the dealer. They drove it, said yes, the ride is hard. But, they just did spheres on a similar car recently, and it only made a minor difference, suggesting that the reward may not be worth the $600 to $700 that the job (spheres alone) would cost.
Any experience in this area?
Thanks for your comments.

I've seen posts with varying results. Other components which can contribute to harsh ride are front shocks and front/rear suspension bushings which are a wear part and require regular replacement. Surprised MB dealer couldn't do a better job of analysis. FYI, if interested, there are a couple of good DIY's on accumulator replacement for the W210. Not difficult and the parts are only about $250 including fluid and filter.

The worn down and beat up bushings in the rear subframe and links account for a serious amount of slop and bad driveability. When perfect they control the car like the magic carpet ride you expect.

Of course the nitrospheres are part of the system but when they go bad - you will even feel a penny on the road surface as the lifting rams (aka shock absorber looking unit in the back) acts as a solid rod - the nitrosphere is the actual shock absorber in your car.

Hard to tell by your description if the spheres are bad or not. When they went out on my 190 I thought my fillings would be bounced out. If you bounce your rear end and it does not bounce or bounce much good chance they are toast.

As others said, it's a pretty easy job to do. Make sure you use MBA fluid if you do it your self.

thanks again

The ride is not THAT hard, but perhaps we are drifting in that direction.
Any other comments?
