Everyone go check your flex discs!

Had an incident on my mothers 300E yesterday where the flex disc failed. Luckily it held together enough for her to get to the dealership first thing this morning, but unfortunately that meant a $458 repair bill :eek::eek:

I'm 2+ hours away and she needed a car immediately so I forced her to go to the dealership. Of course her not understanding how major a flex disc failure is she wanted to wait until I could do it

So if you haven't checked your flex disc recently, do it and replace it. Especially if your wife/girlfriend/mother/SO/child/whoever is driving the car.

that's not a terribly awful price... pia job that i had an indy do... he had to pull off part of the exhaust system to do the front one.. and something with the drive shaft had to be done out of house....pressing on something.. I can't believe I can't remember... it seems the job cost 300 and i supplied both flex disks... the front was shot... but the back was ok

Sounds like you had the driveshaft support bearing done as well as both flex discs.

This is just for the front flex disc.

yes.... you are right..... i forgot what the issue was.... it was the bearing... but since it had to be pulled i had them do the flex disks... the front one was shot

$458 is surprisingly reasonable for a dealer replacement of a flex disc.....the disc itself is probably close to $200 from them.

is this something I need to look at on my 2001 e320?? the one with 162k? Do I have 1 or 2? Sorry if I sound dumb...But I have a picture in my head of a driveshaft hitting the freeway at 80:(

Just be careful everyone
Just had mine done yesterday and the mechanic did not mark the shaft although I told him to do so he said it won't matter
And it's vibrating now :(
Still trying to figure out how to rebalance it

Perhaps you have something like this?

You should always mark the driveshaft so you can put it back exactly how it went. I'd get a new mechanic if I were you. :(

I wish :(
I guess prior to August 1982 we're not all marked
Mine is 1978
I think I'm gonna try the hose clamp trick
