240D engine swap problem. Help!
I wonder if I've shot myself in the foot... Putting a '77 240D/automatic motor in an '82 240D/stick. Intake, inj. pump vac. garbage, vac. pump, etc. are different...no problem. Glow plugs might be. The '77 motor has the old (huge) glow plugs with the "zig-zag" resistance wire and no controller on the left fender. '82 had the standard (small) ones....and "change the head" is not one of the choices in this equation. Anyone "been there, done that?
Thanks! Jim Steere Everything Automotive Crystal MI |
The biggest problem with that install is the lack of mounting holes for the A/C. Maybe not a problem in your area.
Pin type glow plugs can be had for the early head. They come in a kit from Bosch under any of these numbers: FGK2, 0 250 201 901, or 0 250 201 955. |
A/C isn't a problem...
I've got the (good) compressor off the early engine (for that matter, I've got the whole running, hideously rusty 88K car)....and an A/C hose crimping machine. That....I can deal with. Thanks a TON, Steve.

Jethro,
Are you staying with your manual transmission or bringing the automatic with the engine? I have swapped early/late engine chassis before and have learned some things regarding mating engines and transmissions if you have questions. BTW, I loved your music in the early seventies.:) Have a great day, |
"Thick as a Brick" remains as one of my favorites to this day. Good work!:D
