R129 300-24 new to the forum
Hi to all , new to this site , I am looking to have mutual contacts with fellow fans of R 129 cars my 1991 300-24 valve is suffering from a few common faults
Leaking oil from timing chain cover around u shaped seal , I have it striped down and I am in the process of doing it my self after bad experience with a indie. . The pice showing one on here has been my guide, any thoughts on the valve solenoid, ? it was very gummed up, I am wondering if this my be the cause of my other problem intermittent hesitation on acceleration , I will be changing the fuel filter, as a possibility , the Indy said it was the throttle switch , I have bought one from Germany ready to fit holding back until good weather new Indy seems to think it could be fuel settings . Regards to all |

I also have 1991 300SL 4V. 3rd owner. I've had it 12 years and I think at one time or another I've had every common issue occur. Right now dealing with spongy brake pedal. Check out the SL category of this forum. Use the search tool to find lots of information on just about everything that happens to the 129's. Welcome to the group.

The solenoid should be for the AIR pump diverter valve. ( the AIR pump injects air into the exhaust for emission reduction )

Hi thanks for the reply I was not accurate with my description I meant the electrical
mag on the outside of the timing chain cover which operatives the variable camshaft timing It was oiled up, I am also getting oil working its way on to the the electrical connection for the mag, I am wondering if this is working its way through the internals on the mag I can see a ring of plastic when I look into the metal recessed cup |

There is less of an issue with oil getting in the variable cam coil than there is getting oil wicking it's way through wiring towards whatever device controls the cam timing.
With all to other leaks I suspect you just have an external mess. |

Oil leak
Hi thanks for the response I have looked at the wicking , does not seem to be coming that way I have taken the sleeve back on the wiring it seems dry , hope fully when I have sorted the oil leak out I will be able to look further .
Not to much of a mess from the oil will clean up fine . I am hoping it's not a head gasket issue , I appreciate they can go around the same area as the timing chain cover. |

If the head gasket is the original, it most likely has failed or soon will. It is notorious for failure on this engine. The replacement gasket is a "new and improved" design which is supposed to last much longer than the original design. Mine failed at about 90K miles. I had it replaced by a shop, but there has been much written here on the forum on how to do it yourself if you have the right info, tools and time. Check for oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil.

Oil leak
Thanks for the reply , no evidence of oil and water mixing I hope the gasket ' was done previously, I will see how it goes, once I have done the seal I have posted some photos of under the bonnet, I have now found a better indie guy who I would have confidence in doing the head.
So glad I found this site you Americans no how to do things properly . Regards . Last edited by Jonasjas; 02-23-2014 at 03:39 PM. |
