1994 E320 - DM Code 22
 

Does anyone know why some diagnostic trouble code documents define the DM (pin 3) code 22 as crank shaft sensor and others as cam shaft? It is much easier to replace the camshaft sensor than the crankshaft sensor on my car.

The majority of the code definition documents I received on this site define code 22 as the crank shaft senssor. The StarTek Info service manual (by AG Daimler) defines code 22 as the cam shaft sensor.

What symptoms are you having?

The Cam sensor is used to sync injectors to intake valve opening. Proper sync gives a smoother idle. I can't say 100% that the cam sensor is used for another function on your car but it should run with it unplugged before the engine is started. Other brands only look at the cam sensor during cranking and not while running.

And, it should trip a new code if 22 isn't the cam code.

If the crank sensor is bad, it shouldn't run as engine RPM / "what pair of cylinders is up, fire that ignition coil pair" is determined by that sensor.

The CEL came on last week and involved codes 19 & 22. I was told in the other post that code 22 was crank-shaft not cam-shaft. While working on code 19 solution I was finally able to clear the codes and the CEL went off.

I asked if the above codes were all related, but it was not clear. If the codes 19 & 22 are not related, then I want to find out if I need to address code 22 by replacing a sensor - but which one?

The car seems to run good, smooth acceleration and idle. I am not sure why either of these codes came up.

Thank you, I will attempt to start the car with the cam sensor unplugged. If I understand you then if the car starts it is the crankshaft sensor that was giving the error.

Mostly you want to read the codes after pulling the cam sensor. If you still get the 22 and no new codes, the 22 is most likely a cam sensor. If a new code shows up, that is likely the cam sensor code.

The point is to disable the cam sensor and look for a code.
