w124 Starting Issue - Transmission
 

Greetings:
My 1987 300E A/T has developed a new Gremlin.
It will not start from Park. I have to shift down to Neutral to start it and sometimes that doesn't work either. I suspect it's something like a position sensor but can anyone help me with specific part location, name or number?

The neutral safety switch probably is the problem, it is at the lever on the side of the transmission, it also could be the bushing at the end of the lever (where the shift rod attaches), if this is worn out the neutral safety switch will be out of adjustment.

Is the switch accessed from the top (cabin) or from underneath the car?
How about the bushing?

both jobs are from under the car. I had a similar problem and the culprit was A/C condensate dripping on the switch and also sort of going into the wiring tube from the inside of the car.

new condensate tubes and a proper repair job on the wiring fixed it right up.
