Haha, too late to say now

Anyway, here are some extra pictures:

The black plastic part on the lower right corner goes on top of the valve body. If you look at the second picture, you can see that the top of my valve body is pretty much flat. Yours has the plastic part sort of implemented in the metal of the valve body itself.

I don't think it has - but I could be misunderstanding what you mean. I'm pretty sure there's a plastic bit like your black plastic bit somewhere in the garage. I guess if I had sent that as well it would have worked? I think mine is a prosthetic skin coloured thing...

...any way - what ever - you're on the road to recovery.

That swarf looks pretty scary.

Next time you do a filter change can you read off the part number for the valve body? I'm interested to know if that number is different from mine (posted in post#1)

Some interesting things in the part numbers:

The entire valve body was labeled: 116 270 44 07.

Some differences:
- The plastic bit on top, the prosthetic-limb coloured thing you say goes in deeper in the transmission I believe
- Your oil seperator plate has an extra slot in it, my new gasket also has this slot, it's just not present in my plate.
- The top part of the valve body.

The bottom section of the valve body has an identical part number to yours, I'm not to sure about the 'middle' section. But I'm strongly believe that the only change to these valve bodies was in the top-most part.

Ah well, you'll know what I mean once I send yours back The new spring should arrive tomorrow, then it's off to the post office.

Unfortunately, the valve body provided by Stretch had some differences to the point that I wouldn't be able to install it in my transmission. His is an early 722.112 valve body, mine a later one with the plastic holder for the brake bands.

So... no guts no glory. I took my valve body to bits to see its condition, only to realize it to be petty damn good. Everything was spotless clean, no black stuff anywhere. Which of course is a good thing, but doesn't explain the rough shifting. That was untill we got to the mother of all valves. The big one at the upper valve body (with the three screws and three springs).

The short spring was broken in three pieces and therefor of course not giving any resistance to the hydraulic pressure. Everytime this thing shifted, it applied the full 6 bars of oil pressure in a heartbeat. Not good.

So... (sorry Stretch) I went ahead and unscrewed the plate on the 'spare' valve body to find a spring that was intact. Swapped them over. Closed everthing up with new gaskets and bolted it back in the transmission, new filter and fluid, started the car and went for a testrun.

Gear shifts are a bit later now (despite the linkage being correct) (37 / 67 kph), but are much, much smoother. A little bit of fiddling with the modulator should fix that and all should be good.

Went to the dealer to order a new spring and gasket... guess what? €2,17! Compare the cost of that to the €2000,- quote I got from a transmission-builder.
I have the same broken spring in my transmission! Can you help with a part number and vendor for this spring or kit? Thanks!

Sorry for the late response. Part number is: A1159932002, it's still available from your local MB-dealership at a cost of approx. $3. I'd get two of them... my spring only had 100.000 miles before breaking in three pieces which makes me think this is a somewhat weak point.

Thanks for the part number! I'm on the way to get a couple springs.
